Abstract

One of the most pressing challenges confronting sustainable management of water resources is accessto safe water supply and sanitation services for all. Traditionally, dealing with water security andproviding people with access to affordable and safe water has been done by government. However, forthe last couple of decades, there has been increased involvement of the private sector to finance, develop, manage and operate water infrastructure facilities, particularly the new ones such asdesalination plants and water treatment plants. But the terms ‘privatisation’ and ‘contracting out’ arealways highly controversial topics. In Australia, the debate is ongoing. GANESH KEREMANE, JENNIFER MCKAY ANDELNAZ ETTEHAD draw on the empirical data from three online surveys conducted in Australia and documentcommunity and water planners’ perspectives on who should be governing Australia’s water resources. The results indicate a strong preference for the public sector, particularly the federal government.
