Abstract

As is evident from the thesis title “Development and validation of a chronic urogenital Pain Mapping Tool for women: insights derived for understanding mechanisms of pain and implications for management”, this thesis focuses on a systematic assessment of pain through Mapping, utilizing the pain mapping tool (PMT) that was developed as part of the thesis undertaking. Based on hundreds of completed pain maps of symptomatic and asymptomatic women, the thesis focuses next on the evidence derived from the analysis of mapping data, pointing to specific peripheral Mechanisms implicated in the maintenance of CUP. Building on the evidence derived from the mapping of pain and the potential mechanisms involved the thesis discusses the implications of these findings in regards to the Management and classification of CUP. This thesis concludes with specific recommendations based on an overview of research and the unique insights derived from the development and use of the newly developed PMT.
