Abstract

In recent years, astronomical tourism has emerged as a distinctive form of niche tourism with an emphasis on the importance of astronomy-related activities. Because astronomical tourism is still in its early stages of development, there is little understanding of the functional and psychological attributes that astronomical tourists would consider when choosing a destination. In particular, there is a dearth of research regarding astronomical tourists’ feelings and behaviours towards an astronomical tourism destination (dark-sky site). Moreover, a review of the tourism literature demonstrated a deficiency of research exploring the relationship between astronomical tourists’ recreation specialisation and their destination image formation process and the moderating role of motivational levels. Accordingly, the current research investigates the relationship between astronomical tourists’ recreation specialisation, dark-sky site image components, future behavioural intentions and motivation. Understanding these relationships can improve identification and segmentation of this new concept.
