Abstract

Climate change is now widely accepted as a major challenge for our time. It will affect all aspects of life, increasing the pressures on water and energy supplies, modifying the way we practice agriculture, changing the demand for our goods and services and placing pressure on our health system, our infrastructure and our flora and fauna. This paper describes an attempt to respond to climate change in the Australian state of South Australia by producing a state greenhouse strategy which seeks substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while adapting to those climate changes which are already acknowledged as inevitable. The paper provides a broad overview of the strategy and then examines in more detail its provisions relating to buildings, transport and land use. The paper also addresses prospects for achieving the voluntary behaviour changes necessary to achieve the aims of the greenhouse strategy.
