Abstract
This essay provides a critical introduction to ‘queer youth histories’ as a new field of scholarship and research. Through a discussion of historical and theoretical literature this essay provides a definition of queer youth history through a detailed explication of five key characteristics: (1) Seeing queer youth in history; (2) Building a youth-positive queer history; (3) Critical reflection on narrative structure in history; (4) Foregrounding the problems or slipperiness of experience as a historical resource; and (5) Reflections on the role of queer history in young people’s lives, or of histories of youth in queer adults’ lives, including how and in what ways people’s knowledge or experience of the historical matter (or not) in the present
