Abstract
Mineralogical complexities accompany the reduction in gold grades in refractory gold ores and have necessitated cost-effective processing techniques for sustainable recovery of values. In such ores, gold is encapsulated by pyrite, arsenian pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, and a preferential gold association noted for the arsenic-containing mineral fraction. The separation of this fraction has been the subject of extensive research but with limited success. In this thesis, the author used differential oxidation of arsenopyrite and pyrite, with careful control of xanthate concentration, for selective flotation. Separation of the minerals was also possible using a chelating thionocarbamate collector (IPETC) after copper ion activation at high pH. The research findings offer new insight into the use of subtle differences between gold-bearing sulphide minerals for selective flotation.
