dc.description.abstract
The mobile SOUSY VHF (53.5 MHz) radar, located near Andenes on the island of Andoya in Northern Norway, has been used to measure the upward flux of horizontal momentum per unit mass associated with gravity waves and turbulence near the summer polar mesopause. Here we describe the experiment and present some preliminary results. When averaged over a period of about three hours, magnitudes of are found to reach a maximum value of 66 m² s−2 near the peak of the so‐called Polar Mesopause Summer Echo (PMSE). The PMSE itself appears to exhibit substantial aspect sensitivity.
