Abstract
The use of NMR spectroscopy to follow the transfer of HC1 into didodecylamine (dilaurylamine,DLA)/chloroform solution is reported. The influence of the vortex formed in the spinning NMR tube has been found to be small. The initial formation of a thick interfacial layer is in keeping with chemical shift data. Reaction profiles of chemical shift versus distance from a preformed hydrochloride interface have been determined at various times and compared with theoretical prediction. The process of transfer is influenced by the interfacial resistance of the amine hydrochloride, and film theory gives a reasonable fit for data near the interface. Further turbulence caused by a secondary reaction leads to more rapid transfer in the bulk phase than that predicted by diffusion theory.
