Abstract
The disciplinary value of MATTER/IALS lies in the knowledge production it enables rather than its built form, operating as a catalyst for speculative inquiry, pedagogical insights, and reciprocal tacit knowledge exchange between industry suppliers, construction practices, and sustainability imperatives. The physical space comprises of a centralised and evolving collection of more than 150 construction and finish samples that reflect current and emerging industry materials, systems, and practices. It permanently occupies 35 square metres within a university studio in the Kaurna Building at Adelaide University. Samples are displayed across modular shelving, freestanding surfaces, and affixable wall panels designed for tactile interaction and flexible reconfiguration. Integrated technical lighting enables observation under cool and warm conditions, supporting sensory engagement and spatial atmosphere analysis. Signage, QR-linked resources, and industry-donated materials position the MATTER/IALS as a porous interface between education and practice-led research.Supported through a competitive UniSA Major Capital Works grant (2022), the lab reflects recognition of its disciplinary value.
