Abstract

It seems that rarely a day passes when one does not hear the word 'rights' in a discussion. It is very common to hear comments such as 'Every foetus has the right to be born alive"; 'The press cannot harass me because I have a right to privacy'; 'It is every child's right to have an education', 'We should be demanding that our Asian neighbours respect the rights of their citizens', 'Workers have a right to strike', and so forth. But what does the term 'rights' actually mean? It is not a concept that is easily defined. Like the broader phrase 'human rights', it is a term that has been likened to the shifting sands of a desert.
