Abstract
Australia has one of the least affordable housing markets in the world. Australians have also been highly receptive to Airbnb, a disruptive business which has been made possible with increasing globalisation and advances in technology. Airbnb has also changed the way people travel and use their homes worldwide. The thesis explores how Airbnb as a disruptive innovation works in with capitalism and Australia’s housing market to commodify housing and, therefore, has the potential to change conventional notions of housing and home. The research used two case study regions in New South Wales, one metropolitan and one non-metropolitan, each with three neighbouring local government areas (LGAs). The thesis found that Airbnb’s impacts were experienced differently, depending on the LGA but that Airbnb increased rents and sale prices across all localities studied.
