Abstract
In South Australia, the rangelands account for 41% of the state, of this 41%, 71% is held under pastoral lease. Of the 71% of land held under pastoral lease, approximately 200 companies or individuals hold these leases. This demonstrates the influence a small group can have over a large portion of land. How land managers understand and seek to promote natural resource management in their decision-making is not well understood. Yet these land mangers are critical gatekeepers - responsible for managing vast tracks of land in Australia that make up our natural resource and biodiversity surroundings. This paper presents pilot research that measures how land managers of vast tracks of land in Australia understand NRM issues and how the weight they give to these issues in their decision-making for land use. The results of this research are critical for policy makers and NGOs who are charged with preserving and improving NRM and who work with these land managers to do so.
