"Understanding the views and concerns of young people regarding the use of artificial intelligence in clinical healthcare: a qualitative study"

"Background: There is an increasing number of applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to paediatric healthcare. It is therefore important to understand the concerns and values of young people regarding healthcare AI, to ensure that healthcare AI is utilised in line with their expectations, and to address any concerns. Currently, the perceptions of young people regarding the utilisation of AI are not well known. This study aims to explore the values and concerns of young people regarding the use of AI in healthcare. Methods: In this qualitative study, young people with lived experience of healthcare were recruited from a consumer advocate group in South Australia. Each participant completed an interview that featured three vignettes depicting different uses of AI in healthcare. Data were transcribed and analysed using inductive thematic analysis to derive key themes. Results: Six participants were interviewed for this study. Through the analysis of their interviews, three themes were derived. Firstly, providing consent in healthcare should not be a one-size-fits-all approach. This theme is comprised of two subthemes: young people have an evolving and changing capacity for consent, and young people want different people involved in decisions relating to healthcare. Secondly, the importance of maintain in trust in healthcare. This theme is comprised of two sub-themes: seeing patients in person ensures that clinical signs aren’t missed, and AI and doctors are not mutually exclusive. Lastly, mistakes are inevitable in healthcare, which was comprised of two subthemes: doctors and AI make mistakes for different reasons, and young people feel differently about mistake made by doctors versus AI Conclusions: Young people are interested in the use of AI in healthcare but maintain reservations regarding its role in clinical decision-making. Furthermore, young people want to be actively involved in the consent process regarding healthcare AI. Healthcare providers should be aware of these concerns when planning and delivering healthcare using AI. Further research should expand on the current study to explore young people’s views on the use of AI in other aspects of healthcare, including allied health.
