Abstract

Historical archaeology, a discipline that characterizes itself in terms of youthful innovation, is approaching middle age. Those who pioneered the field during the 1960s and 1970s are now professors emeritus. Their students are embedded in the career paths of leading universities. They publish in prestigious journals and imprints, and present keynote addresses at international conferences. Beyond the academy, historical archaeologists have carved out careers in heritage agencies and consultancy businesses. Popular magazines, heritage sites, and museum displays attest to the general community's appetite for the archaeological signatures of our modern world.
