Abstract

The objective of this scoping review is to understand the current extent of knowledge and evidence on the subjects of intergenerational design and its application in spaces, play and service design. The extracted data and sources inform best practice for the co-design of a sustainable intergenerational play space. This review provides an informed framework for intergenerational design by reviewing literature across multiple disciplines through a scoping methodology. Adopting the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) system, our review presents findings from 111 papers published from 2000 to 2023 that were located via four databases. Studies were selected based on keyword searches and aligned themes that inform the application of the design elements and principles for intergenerational play spaces. This review maps out an in-depth preliminary understanding of the topic and relevant publication results from hand sourcing and compiling multidisciplinary database results. This initial process provided an informed foundation for a comprehensive research approach to advancing knowledge on intergenerational play space design. The findings defined key research themes, including design, co-design, spaces, play, engagement, participation and wellbeing. Research within these themes highlighted design elements encompassing physical, temporal, psychological, socio-cultural, political, institutional and ethical principles.
