Abstract
Characteristic neuropathological white matter changes in the brains of patients dying from the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) suggest pathogenetic involvement of either the PrP₂₇₋₃₀ gene or a scrapie-related prion; however, proteinase-K resistant scrapie-like proteins could not be detected in brain tissue from AIDS patients.
