Abstract
The main aims of this study were firstly, to study the mechanism by which butyrate (the main fermentation product of dietary fibre) induces apoptosis of CRC cells, and secondly, to determine the effect of butyrate in combination with NSAIDs (chemopreventive agents) and other agents on apoptosis of CRC cells. For these studies LIM1215 cells and, in some experiments, SW480 cells were used. The experiments described in this thesis provided new data on the caspase-3 activation and apoptosis in butyrate-induced apoptosis of CRC cells, and the interaction of these processes with a number of cellular factors and pharmacological agents.
