Abstract
The declaration of World Heritage status by UNESCO for certain monuments in Vietnam has had negative repercussions for existing communities and individuals who dwell in the vicinity of those world heritage siles. Individuals and communities face eviction, resettlement or serious impediments to their way of life. The demolition of an existing community has ongoing social and humanitarian costs, and is economically and environmentally wasteful. It is particularly damaging for poor and elderly members of the community. While the conservation of world heritage is important both globally and nationally, a more sustainable pathway to world heritage conservation is required.A collaborative approach involving stakeholders in cultural heritage conservation management processes from the beginning is proposed. However, further research is needed in order to gain a deep understanding of the complexities of the situation and to fully understand the effects of displacement caused by cultural world heritage conservation.
