Abstract

Vernacular theory is constructed and communicated outside of the formal context of academic writing. This thesis seeks to establish that Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, comprising over forty-one novels, is doing vernacular theory (meaning theory that is constructed and communicated outside of formal academic writing). I will be applying a mixed methods approach focusing on post-structuralist textual analysis, and also draw on my own experiences as a Discworld fan myself. I further argue that Discworld’s vernacular theory extends into the praxis and culture of its fandoms. I argue that as well as providing supporting evidence for Discworld doing vernacular theory, it particularly points to the possibility that sustained analysis can be found within the vernacular theory done by or with certain kinds of primary texts.
