dc.description.abstractThis thesis identified associations between electroencephalogram (EEG) measures and delirium relative to time (before, during, and after). Further, new data was collected to assess associations between preoperative EEG and event-related potential (ERP) components with incident delirium and its subtypes. Patterns of EEG and ERP measures pre-operatively displayed relationships with delirium subtypes post-operatively. Findings can help refine neurobiological and pathophysiological theories of delirium and applications in delirium risk prediction, clinical management, and prognosis. Findings highlight the importance of considering delirium subtypes independently rather delirium pooled across subtypes. Lastly, this thesis provides support for future research investigating the role of arousal system dynamics in delirium vulnerability, and potential therapeutic avenues for delirium prevention.
