Abstract
Due to a range of pre-existing frameworks within the field of game studies, videogames are rarely considered in relation to the culture surrounding their creation, and thus the extent to which they are shaped by cultural factors often goes unrecognised. Additionally, as games are transmitted internationally, the impact that these inherent cultural aspects have on players outside their country of origin has not been noted. In response to this lack of awareness, Nintendo, Japan and Longing: Videogames Embodying and Communicating Cultural Desires uses a design history perspective to look at four significant game series produced by Japanese game developer Nintendo, and a range of nostalgic artefacts that fans create in response to these digital experiences, in order to reveal the depth and degree to which games draw from, and transmit, cultural ideas.
