dc.description.abstractLiver diseases such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma are common in clinical practice with high morbidity and mortality. Various types of nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed and strategically functionalized to embrace multiple imaging and therapeutic techniques for liver disease diagnosis and treatment. These NPs can significantly improve the targeting delivery of drugs or gene to specific cells of the liver, prolong half-life of therapeutics, and monitor the treatment response of therapeutics. This chapter summarizes research progress focusing on NP targeting to the liver for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Targeting strategies and mechanisms of newly developed NPs as well as NP applications are discussed. We believe theranostic NPs would be a promising multifunctional theranostic platform in liver disease treatment and facilitate significant advancements in this research – active area.
