Description
HEARTLAND proposed an expansion of the genre and subject matter of landscape, one that could include the geo-political, the post-colonial, the numinous and even the corporeal. The selection of the title ‘Heartland’ and the commissioning of works of art by 45 established and up and coming South Australian artists proposed an inclusion of both Indigenous and settler narratives, and acknowledged and acknowledged the more recent use of the term ‘country’ to describe identity and connectedness to place. The exhibition was underpinned by extensive artist and community consultation and initiated an innovative curatorial collaboration with Anangu artists from Amata in the APY lands. The artists from Amata were involved directly in the curatorial process, igniting an innovative collaboration which has led to subsequent research and exhibition outcomes.
