Abstract

A weakness of polymers is their high flammability; under heat, polymers decompose into combustibles, and are very likely to cause a fire. Since most polymers do not have the nature of flame retardancy, flame retardant polymer composites are a key research direction. In this study, we investigated the sealing mechanisms through a morphological observation by filling and sealing triphenyl phosphate into natural microtubule. Adding the filled tubules into an epoxy resin showed no obvious compromise on the stiffness and strength. The tubules proved effective in improving the char formation during combustion whilst reducing the total heat release and smoke release. This self-sealing method may be used in other applications such as the self-healing composites.
