Abstract

The primary objective of this thesis is to explore a more sustainable alternative to community development within Indigenous communities in Australia. Since colonial rule was administered in Australia, Aboriginal communities have seen minimal improvements in living standards and local infrastructure due to poor health provisions, substandard housing and limited educational opportunities primarily due to isolationism, limited analyses and previous ethnocentric sentiment. This thesis will seek to determine the inadequacies within the bureaucratic framework that currently exists and search for alternative ways in which governments at all levels, councils and non-governmental organisations can fund and initiate developments within these communities so they become societies that are considered to contain acceptable global living standards.
