Dr Skye Akbar provides wise advice for new Indigenous ECRs in the hope that her hard-won experience will help others to navigate a system in which there are inherent challenges of being the first or only Indigenous academic at a time when Indigenous expertise is in significant demand, with too few people to fill institutional requirements. Dr. Akbar explores some of the common pitfalls for Indigenous ECRs who find themselves in foreign institutional environments where the demands for their expertise are not always in the Indigenous ECRs’ best interest for career development or meeting community needs. Learning to distinguish which opportunities will be fruitful and which will simply take you away from your own priorities, is critical, but doesn’t necessarily come with a handbook. Dr. Akbar encourages readers to choose what will advance your career and your community.
