Abstract

Illustration professional practice, recognized as the work of an artisan, artist, or designer, has been professionalized through language which articulates expertise specific to the field of illustration. These articulations of illustration expertise have broad consensus in areas relating to illustration technical skill and business; however, they are not clearly defined in the area of expertise described as vision, relating to cognition, creativity, and the notion of authorship. Whilst experienced illustration practitioners and educators may tacitly understand this expertise in the sense that it is evidenced in illustration professional practice, the lack of a shared language to communicate meaning about this aspect of illustration makes it difficult to understand, appraise, and teach. Through the lens of expertise and categorization according to Goodwin, this chapter explores the notion of “vision” as a distinct area of illustration expertise which is highly valued by the field but is not clearly articulated.
