Abstract

Many patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remain undiagnosed, even by doctors they consult regularly, until they have advanced stages of of the disease. Patients may ignore limitations and symptoms of COPS or attribute them to other causes such as increasing age, lack of fitness and weight gain. A delayed diagnosis may deny potentially effective treatment and result in lost opportunity to prevent progression. Only smoking cessation and prevention of exacerbation have been shown to reduce progression of COPD.
