Abstract

Indigenous peoples of Papua are considered a highly disadvantaged group in Indonesia, with associated challenges around poverty and access to education and services. This thesis explored the experiences of 49 Papuan parents and their parenting perceptions and practices across five different regions of Papua. It found that marriage and having multiple children was socially expected, and parenting was perceived to be a family as well as community responsibility. Papuan parenting is shaped by intergenerational, religious, cultural influences and government regulations. In view of limited support from government, communal Papuan parenting was a main source of parental support. Exploring the experiences and perspectives of Papuan parents are pertinent to the implementation of Papuan led parenting programs in Papua.
