Abstract
Overall, within the Australian professional accounting journals, workplace flexibility is portrayed as possible for professional accountants. However, it is not portrayed as a way of 'slowing down' or 'achieving balance' (in the sense of balance as serene rather than 'extreme'), but rather as a temporary work arrangement (to retain staff on their career path) that may be undertaken only within the 'work hard play hard' culture. Accountants wanting flexible work arrangements as a way of 'slowing down' to achieve 'balance' are not portrayed directly in the journals. Rather they are indirectly mentioned only as a 'warning' – fail to comply with the 'work hard play hard' culture and face relegation to the role of a 'second class' of accountant.
