Ionic liquids are molten salts at room temperature, i.e., they consist of ions. More than a billion combinations of ions are available, and these diverse liquids often have low toxicity, low volatility and useful electrical properties. Applications of ionic liquids include energy storage, drug delivery and water purification. Their large-scale adoption is hindered by the limited understanding of their properties. This work used an ionic liquid as a model electrolyte. A film of it was squeezed between two solids (mica sheets) or a solid and a liquid (mica and mercury), and the force during film thinning was measured. By observing changes in behaviour when applying a potential across the film, our results show that modelling ionic liquids as dilute salt solutions is inconsistent. Subtle interactions between ions and surfaces must be considered.
