Abstract

Traditionally the mam source of income for independent quantity surveying profession was derived from the preparation of Bills of Quantities. Therefore the knowledge of measurement principles and the understanding of standard methods of measurement are important and crucial to the profession. Recent review of literatures in Australia indicated that Bills of Quantities are not as much in demand today with the mushrooming of different procurement methods. On the other hand, employers found that graduates are lacking the ability to measure and take-off quantities from drawings and criticized that quantity surveying graduates have to be re-trained to acquire the necessary skills in their early career development. This paper aims to investigate the adequacy of measurement skills in the Bachelor Degree of Construction Management and Economics program and to suggest positive steps for further improvement in the quantity surveying education. A survey from the first and second year students in the program suggested that quantity surveying profession will not be their preference in the choice of their career path and that they would resist learning more measurement courses. The interviews of quantity surveyors however revealed that graduates are lacking a reasonable understanding of construction technology, hands on practice on measurement skills and in-depth teaching.
