Abstract
The article discusses the commodification, or the transfer of an idea into a commodity, of the idea of space in the tourist industry in small towns. Topics include the efforts of travel agencies to focus on consumers in tourism, the influence of television and films on ideas about the public spaces of a small town, and problems with the views of tourists about the nostalgic characteristics of small towns. It is suggested that tourism must focus on community needs as well as allow for multiple and diverse interpretations of the cultures of small towns.
