Abstract
Women at risk of preterm birth are administered synthetic glucocorticoids such as beta methasone to improve lung maturation of preterm infants. However, the normal prepartum surge in cortisol is also known to promote the maturation of other organs, including the heart.It is not clear how cortisol impacts proliferation and hypertrophy of heart muscle cells. We hypothesized that an early rise in plasma cortisol concentration similar to that seen in the prepartum period would promote hypertrophic growth of the heart.
