Abstract
This short paper reflects on the positions presented in a selection of recent articles on the
purpose of higher education and the role that universities are expected to take in the
current political, social and economic climate. The relationship between academic
practice, national priorities and the role of professional organisations such as HERDSA is
examined in the light of the tensions generated when universities are expected to play a dual role of benefitting the individual as well as being expected to enhance the public
good.
