Abstract
In this study, experimental analysis was performed using a range of fabrication methods (3D accurate mould and 3D printer) for micro-corrugated wings by fully mimicking a real dragonfly wing. Particle image velocimetry was applied to compare the flow fields of different manufactured wings at angles of attack 10 degrees and 20 degrees and Re=5×103. The results include free stream velocity, boundary layer measurements, and turbulent kinetic energy. By comparing the flow fields and material properties of three different wings, it is found that although all the manufactured wings were able to capture the flow characteristics successfully, the Mylar stencil film wing had the least thickness (127-micron) and weight (0.3012 gr) compared with others. The results highlight the scope for utilising such a structure to enhance the flight performance of micro air vehicles.
