Abstract

Lochiel Park is a small residential development eight kilometres from the centre of Adelaide in South Australia. It is a master planned community that will eventually have 106 dwellings. It aims to be a "green village‟ that demonstrates how urban, medium-density housing developments can create sustainable living. All houses are equipped with energy- and water-saving devices with high thermal performance ratings; these aim to reduce household potable water use and greenhouse gas emissions to around a quarter of the state‟s average and energy use to around a third of that average. Houses are equipped with monitors that will allow external monitoring of household energy and water consumption and facilitate householders to monitor energy and water use, to guide reduced consumption. This report presents results of a primarily qualitative investigation of the social influences on "green‟ attitudes and household practices of residents, or intending residents, in Lochiel Park.
