Abstract

Due to a number of catastrophic events, vulnerability analysis has been an area of increasing interest and research since the mid 1990s. This research seeks to look at the results of applying two vulnerability measures, importance and exposure, to networks for macroscopic and mesoscopic modelling. The research compares the results of applying the measures to alternative networks, looking at how the size and detail of a network influence the results and account for some of the differences and consistencies in each of the measures. It is concluded that when applying these measures of vulnerability, careful consideration must be given to the size and detail of the network depending on whether an overall impact, including the geographical extent of vulnerability, or a more local impact is required for the problem being investigated.
