Abstract
Employing a mixed methodology of Research through Design (RtD), cultural probes, and audience research, this doctoral research seeks to explore the audience experience design of transmedia theatre. Drawing on Henry Jenkins, transmedia theatre is defined as a work of storytelling with theatre performance at the core and digital media as paratexts. The first stage of the research involves building a conceptual framework through case studies of past examples of transmedia theatre. This framework becomes the basis for a subsequent design exploration, for which collaboration with local theatre companies was sought. The next stage involves prototype creation and testing for Slingsby Theatre’s staging of Man Covets Bird (2019). The third stage involves another round of prototype testing, followed by refinement and the final transmedia design for Q Theatre’s ur House (2021).
