Abstract

Accurate diagnosis of musculoskeletal tumors is important for successful treatment. Whilst it remains a minor procedure, many options have been described for obtaining a biopsy sample and controversy remains. Studies have reported a high risk of complications following open biopsy and have advocated core biopsy as a safer alternative; however, accuracy may be reduced with the smaller sample. With the resurgence of biological studies as a component of tumor management in addition to tissue banking and extended investigation, incisional biopsy has become an attractive technique again. This chapter highlights options and techniques in biopsy of musculoskeletal tumors.
