Abstract

This thesis will theoretically locate emo within wider studies of youth musical subcultures. While I acknowledge the important criticisms and debates that surround the contemporary definition of ‘subculture’, drawing upon the ideas of Paul Hodkinson (2002) about the facets that make up a modern subculture, I will argue that the term remains a useful way to define youth groupings, albeit not within the strict sociological definition produced by the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS).
