Abstract
This study provides a number of key contributions to academic theory across various disciplines. First and foremost, this study presented a rigorous approach to examining the complex relationship between tourism entrepreneurs and their ‘place’, and assessed the influence of this relationship on the consequent performance of the entrepreneur and his/her business. This study also presents a number of implications for tourism entrepreneurs, destination managers and government authorities. In times of economic uncertainty and increasing competition, tourism entrepreneurs’ relationship with their place, including the physical and social elements of the place, can help them gain a competitive advantage.
