Abstract
Pictorial Assembly Instructions(PAIs) are frequently included with bulky consumer products requiring home assembly.Given designing PAIs is a relatively common practice there is benefit in capturing and recording practices and past solutions that have been shown to be effective. This would enable design practitioners to share and develop knowledge in this area. This paper discusses and compares various means of codifying and communicating knowledge for design leading to an argument for the use of pattern languages. This is framed by a discussion of ways to conduct research into design for information usability and how theory(useful, workable knowledge and principles for design) can be seen as an emergent property of practice. The process used to develop the pattern language for PAIs will be described followed by a complete description of the pattern language. How the pattern language will be communicated, implemented and maintained will be explained.
