Abstract

Kangaroo care (KC) is an effective nurturing method to provide optimal neonatal health outcomes, especially for preterm and criticality ill babies in contemporary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Given that the current KC literature focuses on babies and mothers due to the traditional maternal caregiving mode, an exploratory study on fathers providing KC in a South Australian neonatal unit was conducted as a master research project. Data was collected by interviewing ten fathers, and three main themes emerged. KC was described as a silent language of love by some participants and helped the bonding between father and child in the daunting NICU environment.
