Abstract

I present comparative case studies of two Indonesian and two Australian HE institutions which differ in their symbolic capital, student intake and staffing. Drawing on key policy documents and the experiences of twenty academics, I examine the factors influencing their beliefs and experiences concerning assessment. This study found that assessment habitus and assessment capital – whether aligned or not with institutional habitus and symbolic capital – inform the participants’ practices of assessment. There exists a complex dialectic between the institutional habitus and professional habitus of the participants in informing assessment practices, in that the institutions influence the academics’ assessment habitus and vice versa. The study suggests that the less established universities are more adaptable and inclined towards innovation in assessment than the more established universities.
