Abstract

The increasing presence of forced migrants at the borders of developed nation-states has become a prominent reality and a point of much public discussion and political action. In Australia since the 1970s, asylum seekers travelling by boat, referred to as Irregular Maritime Arrivals (IMAs), have arrived in cohorts following displacement by violent political regimes. While Australia is a nation-state capable of offering hospitality to these asylum seekers, IMAs have been met with extreme public hostility and harsh punitive policies. This thesis studies how IMAs are publicly represented, which is a key factor that influences and constitutes their treatment.
