| dc.description.abstract | Constant envelope OFDM (CE-OFDM) waveforms are increasingly being proposed for use in terrestrial and satellite communications. The CE-OFDM technique phase modulates the popular high-peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) multicarrier orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms to mitigate the non-linear distortion caused by high-power amplifiers (HPAs). The growing need for the simultaneous use of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum for communication and sensing applications has led to the advent of joint radar and wireless communication (RadCom) fusion systems, which in turn implies that CE-OFDM, which was originally proposed for communication purposes is becoming more prevalent in joint RadCom fusion systems. The crucial problem of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using constant envelope (CE) multicarrier waveforms has not been investigated. This paper, for the first time, investigates the DOA estimation performance of CE-OFDM waveforms and compares the DOA estimation performance of CE-OFDM with that of OFDM waveforms for transmissions over an additive white-Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The effect of popular HPA models on the DOA estimation is compared, demonstrating that phase distortion negatively affects estimation performance. Preliminary simulation results also reveal that while OFDM shows better DOA estimation compared to CE-OFDM without non-linear HPAs, with nonlinear HPAs, CE-OFDM with high modulation indexes can achieve better estimation performance compared to OFDM. | |
