Abstract

This paper seeks to re-engage the wider languages education community indiscussion on community languages, through exploration of a set of ‘cases’ that expand on the contexts of language and cultural change in Australia through migration shifts, organisational support, and research and activities being conducted into community languages. It is anticipated that a future special issue on community languages in Babel will expand perspectives further, and provide the mainstream education community with insights into how community languages matter to our very diverse student cohort and their families, and the importance of finding ways to make more visible the critical outcomes of community language learning, and how to incorporate these foci into mainstream schooling.
