Abstract

The phenomenon of older people downsizing from a suburban home to a city apartment is increasing in frequency. This shift can include significant changes to physical living space, as well as social connections, and activity networks that influence one's lifestyle. This report presents the results of a co-design research process that explored the experience of a group of people who had recently moved to the Adelaide CBD. The co-design process was conducted over a period of 9 months in 2020/2021. The report highlights some of the significant benefits of the downsizing process identified by co-design participants, while also making recommendations for updates to the local urban planning design guidelines, and identifying the need for further research into going beyond physical accessibility requirements in the design of apartments for older people. The findings in this report demonstrate the success of the distributed model of co-design, and highlight the richly nuanced information that can be obtained through the co-design process, whether undertaken live or asynchronously.
