Abstract
Ionic liquids are increasingly becoming solvents of choice over conventional organic solvents due to their low environmental impact and interesting physical properties (like their low volatility, large chemical diversity and good conductivity). There is however a need to understand the behaviour of ionic liquids in relation to theories developed for conventional organic solvents. This thesis examines the interfacial properties (surface tension, wetting and electrowetting) of ionic liquids and how they vary as the composition of cations and anions changes.
